Reading Resolutions: 2022

My university years have been the ones where I've read the least, which is the opposite of what I feel like it should be. For the past few years, I've been having trouble getting into the books I actually wanted to read after pushing myself through the mandatory school books I was assigned-- I forgot that I chose a major in English because it's something I actually enjoyed. 2021 was the most successful reading year of my life. I got back into reading for fun, and read nearly 200 books outside of school because of it.

My biggest goal in 2022 is to continue that trend, and in aid of that aspiration, I wanted to put together a list of books I do and definitely do not want to read this year to keep track of when I start feeling a bit sick of it. So, without further ado, is my 2022 Reading Resolutions list.

New author(s) you'd like to read?

Joe Hill, Karin Slaughter, and K. Webster.

Previous author I'd like to read more from:

Emily McIntire. I loved her novel, Hooked, it's one of the handful of books I remember super clearly and fondly. I just read the second book in the same Never After series, which I gave 4 stars, and now I want to read some of her other stuff. I just adore how she writes her characters and truly she writes some of the best love declarations.

An author I want to avoid completely:

Colleen Hoover. I've read a good two or three books by her and have yet to rate them above a 2.5 stars. I don't enjoy her characters and the plots of her books always raise so many questions from me. Like I went into her big book from last year (which was so unmemorable to me I had to Google the name for this), It Ends with Us, thinking it was going to be a romance only to spend precisely 4 seconds with the true love interest and to spend 20 minutes ranting about the portrayal of domestically abusive relationships. The only other book I've spent that much time ranting about is Act Your Age, Eve Brown's portrayal of Autism.

Genre I'd like to read more of:

This year the genre I'd really like to read more of (and started reading last year) is horror. I love horror and thriller novels and films, and I'd really like to find some more books in these categories. The biggest problem I have when looking up list's like "the best of horror" or something along those lines is usually I just get someone's big ranking of all the Stephen King books. So maybe that's my condition-- This year I'd like to read more horror that is not written by King.

A classic I'd like to read:

East of Eden- John Steinbeck.

A pre-owned book that I've had forever, I'd finally like to get around to reading:

My Year of Rest and Relaxation- Ottessa Moshfegh

A big book on my TBR:

To Paradise- Hanya Yanagihara. After reading the future classic A Little Life, I'll read almost anything Yanagihara publishes, without question, even if it is 720. As of writing, I'm working my way through The People in the Trees.

The book I want to re-read:

The Great Gatsby- Scott F Fitzgerald. I have nearly half a dozen copies of this book (one of which being a comic) and two tattoos dedicated to this novel, but it's been a few years since I've last read it despite my overwhelming love for it, so I think it's time for another read.

Standalone I'm excited for:

Gallant by V.E Schwab and League of Liars by Astrid Scholte.

Series books I'm excited for:

From most to least exciting for me, firstly is Cassie Clare's third and final book in The Last Hours trilogy, Chain of Thorns. After the ending of the second book, I've been thinking about this series weekly, which is so weird, considering after I read the first book, I had originally intended not to continue the series.

Secondly, Court by Tracey Wolff, a series of which I read the first three books in one sitting and now own all the hard covers; third, Glow by Kennedy Ryan; fourthly, War of Two Queens by JLA; and lastly, SJM's second book in the Crescent City series, House of Sky and Breath

A new series I want to read all of:

Cainesville-Kelly Armstrong.

A book I got for Christmas that I'd like to read:

The Last House on Needless Street- . I love the stories that have several storylines that seem completely unconnected then at the end suddenly all come together, and while I hadn't heard anything about this book online, reading the back of it at the bookstore (drawn in by the fact it had a cat on the cover) made it one of the books on my TBR I'm more excited for.

5 Other books you'd like to read this year:

  1. King Of Battle and Blood- Scarlet St. Claire
  2. The Silent Patient- Alex Michaelides
  3. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo- Taylor Jenkins Reid
  4. The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires- Grady Hendrix
  5. If we were Villains- M.L Rio

Other reading goals:

While my GoodReads reading goal for the year is 52 books, I'd like to try and beat my record from last year (172 books). However, I wanted to set a lower goal so I don't feel as pressured to rush through those books. Namely, I'd like to read a more of the books that are considered "more difficult" (AKA not entirely romance), and focus on reading more classics, nonfiction (of which I want to read at least 5 this year), adn some literary fiction.
